Wig Cap Size & Fit Guide

A wig that fits well feels secure, looks natural at the hairline and is comfortable to wear all day. Here's how to find your cap size in about two minutes.

How to measure your head

You'll need a soft measuring tape (or a piece of string and a ruler). Flatten or braid your hair first so you measure the way you'll wear the wig.

  1. Circumference (most important): start at your front hairline in the middle of your forehead, go above your ear, around the back of your head along the nape, above the other ear, and back to the start.
  2. Front to nape: from your front hairline, over the top of your head, to the nape of your neck.
  3. Ear to ear: from the top of one ear, across your hairline, to the top of the other ear.

Cap size chart

Cap size Head circumference Who it fits
Small 21 to 21.5 inches (53 to 54.5 cm) Petite heads
Medium 22 to 22.5 inches (56 to 57 cm) Most adults
Large 23 to 23.5 inches (58 to 60 cm) Larger heads or lots of hair underneath

Measuring between two sizes? If the wig has adjustable straps, choose the larger size and tighten the straps. Wearing braids or a lot of hair under your wig can add up to half an inch.

Tips for a secure fit

  • Adjustable straps: many wigs have straps at the back of the cap. Tighten them for a snug fit, but never so tight that they pinch or give you a headache.
  • Combs and clips: slide built-in combs into your braids or cap so the wig stays put.
  • Grip band: a silicone wig grip band adds hold without glue and helps a wig that's slightly loose.
  • Wig cap: a stocking wig cap keeps your hair flat and smooth so the wig sits evenly. Our Glueless Wig Install Kit has everything you need.
