Glueless vs. Lace Front vs. Closure Wigs: Which Is Right for You?

Posted by Aubriras Boutique on

Glueless, lace front, closure, HD lace, headband... wig shopping comes with a lot of words. They all describe the same thing: how the wig is built at the front and top, which decides how natural the hairline looks, how you can part and style it, and how much time it takes to put on. Here is a plain-English guide so you can pick the right one the first time.

The quick answer

  • Want it on and off in minutes, with no glue? Choose a glueless closure wig.
  • Want the most natural hairline and the freedom to wear it pulled back? Choose a lace front wig.
  • Want the fastest, most low-key option for busy days? Choose a headband wig.

Lace front wigs

A lace front wig has a strip of sheer lace across the front hairline, usually from ear to ear. The hair is hand-tied into that lace one small section at a time, so the hairline looks like it grows from your scalp. You will see sizes like 13x4 or 13x6: the first number is the width across your forehead in inches, and the second is how far back the lace goes. A deeper lace (13x6) gives you more room to part and style.

  • Best for: the most natural-looking hairline, side parts, deep parts, and styles pulled back off your face
  • Keep in mind: most lace fronts need the lace cut to your hairline, and many people secure them with glue, tape or an elastic band. They take a little more practice to install.

Closure wigs

A closure wig has a smaller square or rectangle of lace on top, where you part your hair, such as 4x4, 5x5 or 2x6. The rest of the cap is regular wig cap material. Because there is less lace, closure wigs are easier to put on, need less upkeep, and tend to cost less than a lace front of the same length.

  • Best for: beginners, everyday wear, and anyone who wears a middle or slight side part
  • Keep in mind: you can only part the hair inside the lace area, and the lace does not run along your whole hairline, so it is not the best choice for slicked-back styles.

Glueless wigs

"Glueless" is not a separate lace type. It means the wig is built to stay secure without adhesive, usually with an adjustable strap at the back, combs inside the cap, and lace that is often pre-cut and pre-plucked. Most glueless wigs use a closure (like 5x5 or 2x6), which is why you will see "glueless closure wig" a lot.

  • Best for: quick installs, protecting your edges from glue, and taking the wig off every night
  • Keep in mind: getting the right cap size matters more when there is no glue. Check our Wig Cap Size & Fit Guide before you buy.

What is HD lace?

HD (high definition) lace is a thinner, more see-through lace. It blends into more skin tones and is harder to spot up close. The trade-off is that it is more delicate, so handle it gently, keep glue and makeup off it when you can, and never pull on it when you take the wig off. HD lace can be used on lace fronts, closures and glueless wigs.

Headband and full lace wigs

  • Headband wigs have no lace at the front. You wear them with a headband or scarf over the hairline, and they go on in about a minute. Great for busy mornings and protecting your edges. Shop headband wigs.
  • Full lace wigs have lace across the whole cap, so you can part anywhere and wear high ponytails. They are the most versatile and the most delicate.
