Wig, Sew-In, Clip-Ins or Ponytail? How to Choose the Right Hair for You

Posted by Aubriras Boutique store Admin on

There are more ways than ever to add length, volume or a whole new look. But wigs, sew-ins, clip-ins and ponytails each work differently, and the right one depends on your hair, your schedule and how often you like to switch it up. Here's a simple guide to help you choose.

Quick comparison

Style Put on in Wear for Best for
Headband wig Minutes A day at a time Beginners, busy mornings
Glueless lace wig About 10 to 15 minutes A day at a time A natural hairline without glue
Lace front wig 30 minutes or more Days to a couple of weeks The most natural hairline and parting
U-part wig About 15 minutes A day at a time Blending with your own leave-out
Sew-in bundles A few hours with a stylist 6 to 8 weeks A long-lasting look you don't take off
Clip-ins 5 to 10 minutes A day at a time Extra length or volume on your own hair
Ponytail Minutes A day at a time Instant length for a sleek or curly pony

Wigs

A wig covers all of your hair, so your own hair gets a rest from heat and daily styling. You can switch looks whenever you like.

  • Headband wigs: no lace and no glue. Slip it on and go.
  • Glueless lace wigs: a natural-looking lace hairline that stays on with a band and straps. Our beginner's guide walks you through your first one.
  • Lace front wigs: the most realistic hairline and the most styling freedom, but they take more practice to install. Browse all wigs.
  • U-part wigs: a little of your own hair is left out at the part, so the blend looks completely natural.

Sew-in bundles

Bundles are sewn onto braids by a stylist and stay in for weeks. They're great if you want a look you don't have to think about every morning, but you can't take them off at night, and your scalp needs regular cleaning. Most installs use 3 or 4 bundles plus a closure or frontal. See how many bundles you need, or shop bundle deals, closures and frontals.

Clip-ins and ponytails

The easiest way to try longer or fuller hair. Clip them in for the day and take them out at night, with no commitment and no stylist. They work best when your own hair can blend with the extension's texture. Shop clip-ins and ponytails.

Which one should you choose?

  • Brand new to added hair? Start with a headband wig or clip-ins.
  • Want a natural hairline every day? A glueless lace wig.
  • Want to set it and forget it for weeks? A sew-in.
  • Want to protect your own hair? A wig, worn with loose braids underneath and taken off at night. Here's how to protect your natural hair.
  • Just want length for a night out? A ponytail.
